Polygonal Mind, a leading creative studio specialized in transformative digital experiences, together with the Yuga Labs team - the parent company of the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) - successfully transformed the 10,000 Bored Ape NFT collection into 3D avatars, enabling BAYC owners to immerse themselves in a new dimension.
The Mission
The BAYC collection is 2D, but Yuga Labs wanted to bring the Apes to life in Otherside, its ambitious metaverse project. Polygonal Mind was brought on to transform them into fully functional 3D avatars in Otherside. We worked diligently to create 3D avatars that loyally represent the original collection’s style while also adhering to the technical standards that allowed them to be deployed across a variety of platforms.
Development
Polygonal Mind and Yuga Labs collaborated on this ambitious project using advanced 3D modeling and texturing tools to achieve premium quality avatars.
During the initial production phase, the team analyzed the entire project, categorized traits, and organized them into respective categories. This process continued until a base Ape model was created, serving as a testing ground for all traits. Collaboration with the rigging team ensured flexibility in modifying shapes and sizes.
Continuing from there, the team meticulously aligned 3D traits with the original PFP preferences. Additional traits were created, reinventing and enhancing the collection’s overall aesthetics.
The final phase included testing, combining traits, and rendering to ensure seamless functionality for all 10,000 trait combinations. Then, the team delivered the final files.
Conclusion
The combined efforts resulted in the successful achievement of the main objective: creating a 3D avatar collection compatible with different engines, while maintaining AAA game quality and preserving the essence of the original BAYC project. Challenges were met with innovative solutions, and the studio expresses gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with Yuga Labs on this innovative project.
